Intro

Quick.exe is a powerful hardware sistem info detection program that provides valuable details about devices installed in your system.
QUICK is able to detect:

- CPU resources (speed, internal cache, family, model, stepping, some bugs)
- BIOS details (type, version, features)
- maniboard info (manufacture, chipset)
- internal memory (total size, allocation)
- external memory
- video card (chipset manufacture and type, video memory size, VESA features)
- sound card (type, DMA, IRQ, SB Base port)
- mouse & keyboard
- ports (LPT + COM)
- printer
- system details (OS version, registered key, product owner, product ID)
- other info (system time and date, environ variables)

Our software will never be "done," and we hope that it gets better and better. In any case, we can't guarantee that it's perfect; in fact, we'll guarantee that it's not. By using this software and documentation you must accept this disclaimer of warranty.

What is Fomalhaut?
Fomalhaut (fml.exe) it's a companion program used only by Quick in order to enhance detection capabilities under Win XP and VISTA.

How can I use Fomalhaut companion?
You can't use directly. Only Quick.exe will execute this program in some situations. Just let fml.exe in the same folder with Quick.exe.

Quick.exe it's able to run without Fomalhaut copmanion?
Yes, Quick.exe is designed to run alone under any Microsoft operating system, but with some limitations under Windows 2000/XP/VISTA.

Quick.exe list the components of your computer without you having to look inside.

Quick can help you with many problems. Let's see:

- when you buy new hardware, to see if correspond with specifications;

- to see if everything is OK after a hardware upgrade/replacement or after installation; note that Quick can see only installed devices. The detection proces usually performs logical scan of components, only in some special situations phisicaly direct detection is used. For example, if you have an unformatted HDD, don't expect that Quick show you something about this, even if it's declared in BIOS settings. The same can be told about mouse or sound card: without drivers will not be detected.This is not applied to RAM memory, CPU or video card that will be detected in any condition.

- if you want to make a BIOS update; Quick.exe show mainboard manufacture, chipset, ID string, BIOS type and size. Should be enough to find a BIOS update file using a normal search engine. See below a short description about subject.

- to know more details about your computer;

- used as a debug tool;

- to see Windows registred elements (computer name, registred key, product ID, company name etc.); all those are listed in 'system' page

- for advertising purpose: your promotional message can be put to the first page of Quick or included as a HTML file in QUICKSFX archive. See "Prices" section for more details.

How to make a BIOS upgrade?
===========================

You need a flasher program (e.g awdflash.exe ) corresponding with your BIOS type, and a binary file with newer BIOS (for Award has .bin or .awd extension and .rom for AMI).
Normally these files can be found on manufacturer's official page. For older computer models, without current support from manufacturer, there are available some web pages that offer BIOS updates (see link section from our web page). Alternatively, try to search about your mainboard ID string with any search engine (Google or Teoma are preferred).
If you encounter difficulties to found correct update, we can help you. Send us via e-mail a report file created with Quick and you'll receive files you need.

Ok, if you have the correct flasher and update file, you have to boot in real mode. Launch flasher program and follow the instructions. You'll have to input the name of file containing update. Also make a BIOS back-up.After update, restart your computer.

The same method is applied to make a BIOS update for video card, but, surely, you need another flasher program and another BIOS file. For more details see "Links" section from our site, where you'll find some pages with flasher programs, BIOS files and other stuff useful for you.

For video updates is a good idea to test new BIOS before flashing. You can use VGABios program, which loads BIOS file in memory and see if your video support it. If test fail, do not use this BIOS file. It's sure that video card will be damaged in this way.

If you encounter an error message, it's better to renonce to flash BIOS.

- "The programs file's part number does not match with your system" appears when the new BIOS file not fit with mainboard. Find the correct BIOS upadte file and try again.

- "Unkown type flash" occurs commonly when you use an incorect flasher version. If you have to update a old mainboard, use a lower version of flasher. For Award try version 7.xx for old boards and 8.xx for new ones.

If smoething goes wrong, don't panic !!! There are several methods to recover your original BIOS.

Why to update the BIOS?
======================
* for larger HDD support especially on older boards, in order to breake 8 or 32 GB limit; also new mainboards should need update for newer HDDs bigger than 200 Gb
* better support for CPU
* some bug-fixes of original BIOS release
* new features/settings added in BIOS menu

Utilities for flashing
======================

* Award flasher programs
awdflash.zip
* UNIFLASH (good for AMI BIOS) UniFLASH
* NVflash (for video card update) nvflash.zip
* VGABios - test if your video BIOS update works before flasing VGAbios.zip

Details about detection:

Brief overview of switches:
===========================

Quick.exe [/c, /r, /t, /s]
/c - creates file containing info about your hardware; send us this file if you want to help
/r - automatic report, always stored in "report.txt" file
/t - creates record file that includes execution trace for debugging purposes
/s - display serial number of program and user info

Keys:
=====

F1 - help screen (not available yet)
F2 - save current screen to report file
F4 - start automatic report (similar with quick /r command)
F7 - 'alive test'; if your computer is still active, will beep and change status of 'Num Lock' key; useful if your system seems to hang
F10 (or middle click)- quick exit before normal termination of program
Esc (or right click) - skip next test
Any other normal key (or left click)- go to next screen

Requirements

- 8086 or better CPU
- cca. 600 KBytes of free System Memory
- MS-DOS v.4.0 + or Windows (all)

Known bugs, limitations and incompatibilities

- some newer CPUs cannot be detected because we haven't any information about these
- possible false results returned for mainboard manufacture and chipset
- some ATI cards can be detected to have only 16 Mb video memory

Problems
========
When problems occur running Quick.exe, try following steps:
1. Run again Quick.exe in 'trace mode' (quick /t) in the same environment that caused problem.Press 'F2' key to each screen in order to create a partially report file.
2. Create collect file ( quick /c)
3. Send us trace, report and collect files with a brief description of problem.
4. Make reports about your hardware using another programs, if you can.
Put this files together into a single master archive and send as an e-mail attachment.
